SINGING BOWLS – A Different Perspective on Healthcare – By Julie Kelly

Purely by accident I discovered the many health benefits of the ‘Tibetan singing bowl’ Up until a couple of years ago, I’d used the bowls only for relaxation or soothing effects, but never as an actual part of my healing work. After many years coming and going to India & living in the Tibetan community, I developed a fascination with the bowls, but to be honest, few if any Tibetans actually acknowledged or seemed aware of using the bowls in healing.

Healing physical mental spiritual health sound vibrate vibration energy tone cells pain depression anxiety stress peace inner

The disregard of my excitement and wonderful fantasy about these magical little bowls, being used in monasteries & Temples all over India, nowadays it simply didn’t seem to be the case. After saying this… isn’t completely false either – as explained in the interview below, between Rain Gray & his Tibetan Brother in law – Lama Lobsang Molam. You see, the bowls were used historically in Tibet, long before the Chinese communist invasion. Following this, much of the old traditions were lost or banned. While a few monasteries do still use the bowls, few younger Tibetans seem to know of them.

Anyway, a very dear friend of mine gave me a set of these beautiful bowls and I realised, the sounds they emit work as a type of energy medicine that can heal actual physical pain, depression, and stress disorders. One way in which they work, is by allowing your brain to focus on and get in tune with the sounds of the bowl. Another way however, is by allowing the physical vibration of the bowl

to permeate into the affected area on a deep cellular level. Because each bowl focuses on a different chakra, the clearing process throughout the body can be truly amazing. So it seems true to say, these bowls are a powerful tool in the healing of both mental & physical health conditions. As we listen to these sounds, we tend to feel them just as much as we hear them.

The director of Medical Oncology and Integrative Medicine at the Cornell Cancer Prevention Center in New York, Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, says,

“If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies. One reason sound heals on a physical level is because it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.”

People use Tibetan singing bowls for many purposes, including stress reduction and pain relief. Some people use the bowls in combination with other healing practices, such as meditation and deep breathing.

Many proponents claim that the vibrations of a singing bowl can produce beneficial changes in the body by reducing stress, “harmonizing” the cells, and “balancing the body’s energy system.” Some also claim that Tibetan singing bowls can stimulate the immune system and produce beneficial changes in brain waves.

Personally, I feel very blessed at having the opportunity to spend time researching Eastern healing techniques alongside those in my own Western culture, and I must say the two view health very differently. In the east, illness is thought to be an imbalance & disharmony within the body, in other words things going out of sync like an imbalance in the cells or a given organ. But the interesting thing about Eastern medicine is, it doesn’t separate mental health from physical health. If the mind is disturbed, then physical health problems are certain to arise and vice versa. Think about it…If you’re in physical pain, you can’t focus the mind properly etc. In the West, medicine tends to be catagorized. For example, you have a stomach problem and are referred to a gastroenterologist, a heart problem we go to a cardiologist and so forth. No concern is given to the root cause which almost always ‘except where there is a physical defect’ comes from the mind.

Using the bowls and their energy, causes the brain to switch to what we call ‘Theta brainwave frequencies’ which in turn bring more clarity of mind, as well as deep meditative and peaceful states. This positively affects our nervous system and engages our relaxation reflex while also inhibiting the pain or stress response.

It’s fair to say, these singing bowls are powerful tools in the area of healing.
